Opinion: Unchecked illegal immigration strains Wisconsin. Evers shouldn’t obstruct law.

It’s time to put Wisconsinites first. We don’t need dismissive rhetoric from our governor.

In case you missed it last week, Gov. Tony Evers called the plan of President-elect Trump’s border czar, Tom Homan, to punish local officials who don’t comply with immigration laws “stupid talk.” He further stated, “We’ll do whatever we can” to avoid mass deportations in Wisconsin.

These statements ignore a harsh reality: Failing to enforce immigration laws jeopardizes the safety of our communities and undermines the rule of law. It also strains local budgets for schools, hospitals and social safety net programs. Harboring people in this country illegally is a felony, and our governor should be cooperating with enforcement efforts designed to deport dangerous criminals, not obstructing them.

Calling these concerns “stupid” is an insult to voters who demanded change on Nov. 5.

Biden-Harris administration failed us with unchecked illegal immigration

We’ve seen the consequences of allowing this criminal activity to thrive in our country. In Abbotsford, a migrant is charged with stabbing three people, killing two children. In Prairie du Chien, a Venezuelan gang member is charged with sexually assaulting a woman and abusing a child, and in Rusk County, a father of three was killed by a man who admitted he is not in this country legally and was charged with felony homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle. These are not isolated incidents; they are a direct result of the Democrats’ open border policies.
