Rep. Tiffany introduces legislation to give state, local governments final say in refugee resettlement process

The CARE Act would prohibit the resettlement of refugees in any state or local jurisdictions that take action to formally disapprove the resettlement

WASHINGTON (WEAU) – Rep. Tom Tiffany (Wis.), along with Rep. Derrick Van Orden (Wis.), Rep. Andy Ogles (Tenn.) and Rep Lance Gooden (Texas) introduced legislation today that would empower state and local governments the ability to reject federal refugee resettlements.

The Community Assent for Refugee Entry (CARE) Act would allow state and local governments to refuse the resettlement of refugees if formal action is taken to object to the resettlement in their area.

“Local and state governments should not be forced by the federal government to resettle refugees; they deserve a say in the process,” said Congressman Tiffany. “The lack of public input and transparency regarding refugee resettlements has already fueled significant controversy in Wisconsin, and this commonsense legislation will give Wisconsinites a meaningful voice in refugee resettlements.”

This legislation comes on the heels of citizen outcry in both Eau Claire and Chippewa Counties where resolutions recommending a pause in the process for an independent economic study from World Relief were voted on.

These resolutions failed 18-9 in Eau Claire County in December and passed 15-6 in Chippewa County in February.

Eau Claire City Council unanimously reaffirmed its support for the refugee resettlement program in January.
